CROIX / TRANSPORTATION From the first underwater national park to picturesque picnic areas, St. Croix offers unique recreational opportunities. Purchased by Denmark from France in 1733, St. Croix is flatter than the other islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands group. Agriculture, rum production and oil refining serves as the major industries. With approximately 80 square miles (208 square kilometers) in size, St. Croix is the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Its two main cities are Christiansted and Frederiksted.
