Page Text ---------- Mango Tango Art Gallery ST. THOMAS BEACHES BRIAN MURPHY The beaches on St. Thomas, like all of the beaches of the Virgin Islands, are open to the public. Though all are famous for their white sand, brilliant sunshine, and breathtaking turquoise water, you'll find that each beach is unique. While some beaches attract crowds, others are very secluded. Most beaches offer rentals including snorkel gear, windsurfers, floats, and Sunfish. Remember that in unfamiliar water, it is best to practice the buddy system. A word of caution: if you do plan to spend time in the water, please leave your valuables at the hotel. St. Thomas boasts a number of secluded and popular beaches. Below is a sampling of some of the favorite spots for residents and tourists alike: Bluebeard's Beach - East End Access: Route 322. Windsurfer rentals available. Brewer's Beach - West End, near University of the Virgin Islands. Access: Route 30 West, past the airport and college. Picnic tables. Mobile food vans offer food and beverages. Hull Bay - North Side Access: Route 37 to bottom of hill, sharp right to beach. Body and board surfing. Restaurant. Lindbergh Beach - Southwest on Airport Road. Access: Airport Road. Restaurants, sports, and rentals. Magen's Bay - North Side. Access: Route 35. Magens Road. Rentals, lounge chairs, beach bar, snack shop, boutique, picnic shelters, Locals - $2.00/car, $2.00/adult, $2.00/child & free/child under 12; Visitors - $4.00/car, $4.00/adult, $4.00/child & free/child under 12. Bathrooms and lockers are available. Morning Star - South side near Frenchman's Reef Marriott Hotel. Access Route 30, past Frenchman's Reef Marriott to the bottom of the hill. Chairs, rentals, umbrellas, beachside snack and beverages bar, windsurfing and parasailing lessons, sports. Sapphire Beach - (Dive-In Shoppe) Located at the Sapphire Beach Resort & Marina. This popular snorkeling spot features rental chairs, towels and water sports, among the many amenities. Scott's Beach - East End. Access: Route 32 to turn off Compass Point, beach is on left, access through the restaurant. Secret Harbour - East End. Access: Route: 322, turn right just before National Park Dock. Follow road, make sharp right, sharp left to Secret Harbour Beach Resort grounds. Rentals, lounge chairs (guests only), terrace restaurant. Stumpy Bay - West End. Access: Drive one mile down an unpaved road off Route 30 West, then walk one-half mile to beach. Vessup Bay - East End. Access: Route 32 (Red Hook Road). Please carry your own chairs and refreshments. Watersports rental. TENNIS - Tennis buffs can find private courts at: Frenchman's Reef Marriott Sapphire Beach Resort & Marina St. Thomas Yacht Club Wyndham Sugar Bay Beach Club & Resort Ritz Carlton Bolongo Bay Bluebeard's free public courts are available at Subbase, where lights are on until 10 p.m. Remember to check the Yellow Pages to confirm court availability. GOLF - See Yellow Pages for locations and tee times. WATER SPORTS - Deep-sea fishing, snorkeling, scuba-diving, swimming, sailing, boating, surfing, and water- skiing, are available on all three islands. One-day charters, half-day charters, boat tours, ferry rides, and all types of equipment rentals make it convenient to explore the sea. See the Yellow Pages for specific listings. 4
