Page Text ---------- Mango Tango Art Gallery LOCAL ARTS KATHY CARLSON REICHHOLD CENTER FOR THE ARTS #2 Brewer's Bay, St. Thomas Nestled in a mountain valley among a wide array of local flora and natural stone work on John Brewer s Bay, the Reichhold has consistently featured the finest in music, dance, comedy and theater. This quintessential open-air amphitheater seats 1,200 and has hosted the talents of many including Chuck Mangione, Bill Cosby, Celia Cruz and The Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra. Box 180, Cruz Bay The school, which began in 1972 by offering steel band lessons, has grown into a comprehensive entity offering classes in many exciting areas. By offering programs to several grade schools in the area, the school introduces children to the wonders of the arts. Dance classes at St. John s School of the Arts include creative movement, jazz, ballet, modern and Caribbean. For those who create with their hands, there are classes in ceramics, drawing, painting and hand quilting. Music classes feature piano, guitar, and steel band. Classical concerts are offered to the public, which include blues and jazz. The V.I. Film Society offers film on St. John supported by the St. John School of the Arts. The St. John School of Arts will expand, adding a two-story facility. TILLETT GARDENS In Tutu on Route 38 East. 4126 Anna's Retreat, St. Thomas Since 1959 Tillett Gardens has been an arts center in St. Thomas. Residents and visitors are invited to enjoy the Garden and the special events, which are presented on a regular basis. The Tillett Art Gallery features the screen-printed maps and islands scenes created by the late Jim Tillett and now being produced by his protg Sonny Thomas. The print studio is open to the public and Sonny is on hand to explain and demonstrate the printing process. Sonny also screen prints the timeless Tillett designs, which are available by the yard and in tropical garments. CARIBBEAN DANCE COMPANY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS (CDC) Christiansted & Frederiksted, St. Thomas Caribbean Dance Company, has as its purpose to unearth, preserve, teach and perform the unique cultural traditions of the West Indies. Now in its 30th year, CDC is one of the territory s most widely traveled cultural ambassadors; in the past decade alone the company has embarked on 27 tours throughout Europe and North America. Consisting of 18 world-class dancers, singers, drummers, and musicians it has consistently garnered warm praises and has made hundreds of friends for the territory on its tour abroad. CDC s has locations in Christiansted, Frederiksted and Charlotte Amalie, where 85 weekly classes serve close to a thousand island children with dance training each year. VIRGIN ISLANDS INSTITUTE OF PERFORMING ARTS 72 Kronprindsens Gade St. Thomas The Virgin Islands Institute of Performing Arts is a non-profit organization offering after school classes in the Fall and Spring semesters and a six-week summer school program. Instruction in dance (ballet, jazz, tap), theater and music are offered. ISLAND CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS St. Croix This facility includes two theaters: One amphitheater that seats approximately 1,200 and the Sidney Lee Theater, an educational center for the performing arts. They host multi-cultural functions, ranging from plays to concerts, dance performances, exhibits, seminars, graduations, and community theater. 21
