Page Text ---------- St. John Island Map Smaller than Manhattan, the island was first colonized by the Danes in 1717. Today, much of St. John is occupied by the Virgin Islands National Park which was established in 1956. Occupying approximately two-thirds of the 20 square-mile (52 square-kilometer) island, the park features quiet headlands, coves, extensive offshore areas including reefs and underwater marine gardens, palm-fringed white sandy beaches, remains of Danish colonial sugar plantations and more.
